The exam board I generally use is ABRSM. Their website is stuffed full of useful information, downloadable practice apps, recordings and guidance. Check it out at www.abrsm.org.

Need a violin? I have a selection of sizes in the studio which my pupils have outgrown and are looking to pass on to someone else (in exchange for money, naturally). But if I don't have what you need, or for other local music-related needs, I recommend Julian Batey Violins and the Salop Music Centre, both in Shrewsbury.

There is a really excellent and useful collection of folk tunes downloadable at www.tuneworks.co.uk. These form the basis of sessions held at several of the major folk festivals in the UK, and are a great place to start your collection of tunes you can play down the pub...

Anyone who has spent more than about 15 minutes in my studio will know how MASSIVELY ENTHUSIASTIC I am about you all practising with a metronome. If you don't already have one, there is an excellent free downloadable one called Pro Metronome. It's available as an app for iPads etc, and apparently now for Android devices too. Search for it in your relevant app store.
